The learning pit is a metaphor that we are implementing in our school which is based on James Nottingham's challenging learning. http://www.jamesnottingham.co.uk/
The learning pit is a way for children to understand what learning feels like and it also allows teachers to explicitly teach children strategies so they know how to deal with learning when it becomes difficult. The children recognise that learning can be frustrating and challenging; however, the sense of accomplishment once they come out of 'The Pit' is outstanding.
Many teachers who have been trialing this initiative have mentioned that their students see this as a 'cool' trend and often use the term - "I've been in the pit today."
